These days, plant-based meats convincingly mimic the real thing. The doctor will see you… in the comfort of your own home, as visits have gone virtual. Our phones and watches and rings can tell us how many steps we have taken, our heart rate and calories burned, even the amount of REM sleep we got the night before. It seems there is a new advancement in the world of health and wellness nearly every day. And yet, multivitamins have remained relatively unchanged since they were introduced more than 50 years ago, offering the same benefits—as well as the same drawbacks—decade after decade.
Until now, with Solaray’s introduction of Liposomal Multivitamins. Knowing that more than 70% of supplementers take a multivitamin regularly but remain concerned about nutrient absorption along with stomach discomfort and a strong odor with consumption, we set out to revolutionize multivitamins.1 Our new cutting-edge liposomal formulas address all three of these issues and are moving multis forward for good.
How? What exactly is a liposome? Read on for the answers.
What Are Liposomes?
Liposomes are small bubbles composed of the same fats that make up human cells. In fact, the word liposome translates loosely to “body of fat.” More specifically, these spherical vesicles are comprised of an aqueous (water) core surrounded by phospholipid bilayers.
It is precisely this unique structure that makes them so beneficial for supplements: Liposomes can be loaded with both water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins—as well as minerals, herbs, and other nutrients—which they fully surrounded in a layer of protection.
This barrier is key, because when the liposome is consumed, it is believed to help the ingredients contained within it survive the digestive process so they can reach and be absorbed by cells.*
Liposomal technology is not new in and of itself. Because of its ability to enclose an ingredient, it has been previously used by pharmaceutical companies with certain hard-to-absorb therapeutic medications. It is difficult to make true liposome agents properly, however, so this delivery system has not been widespread in the supplement space until today. More on our proprietary process below.
What Are the Benefits of Liposomal Multivitamins?
As mentioned above, there has long been concern over nutrient absorption with multivitamins. Studies have shown we may only absorb a portion of nutrients in traditional supplements, with many not making it past the harsh environment of the gut to become bioavailable to the small intestines.2
But since liposomes encase and safeguard nutrients from stomach acid and enzymes, when taken in supplement form, it makes them an effective vessel for nutrient delivery. Because they’re structurally similar to human cells, liposomes can effectively bind with them and release the nutrients directly where they’re needed.*
Indeed, research shows enhanced absorption rates with liposomal delivery; in studies with Vitamin C specifically, liposomal Vitamin C has been demonstrated to be three times more bioavailable than forms offered in traditional USP Vitamin C tablets.3 This means your body gets more of the nutritional support it needs and that you expect from your supplement.*
Liposomes’ protective barrier also helps the nutrients act gently on the digestive system while masking some of the odors typically associated with multis. In other words, applying liposomal technology to multivitamins is a win-win-win.
Why Do We Need Liposomal Multivitamins Now?
It isn’t just that we may not absorb all of the nutrients in our supplements, but also that we may not absorb all of the nutrients in our foods.
According to Pamela M. Peeke, MD, MPH, FACP, FACSM, Head of the Solaray Science Advisory Team, and one of America’s top physicians, named by the Consumers Research Council of America, it is often overlooked but true that we absorb far fewer nutrients than we realize. She shares: “Even the most purposeful, curated, ‘healthy’ food diets will have naturally occurring nutritional gaps.” Also contributing to these gaps: everything from lack of nutrient-dense options in today’s Standard American Diet, to soil degradation, to current challenges around food inequality and food shortage.
This is the case regardless of our age, sex, or life stage, and it is an important message we have been working to spread: Food Is Not Enough. Supplements such as multivitamins work in tandem with food to help us better find nutritional balance.
Introducing New Solaray Liposomal Multivitamins: 4 Powerful Formulas
Solaray’s new revolutionary Liposomal Multivitamins are intended to help solve the underlying issues of nutrient availability and absorption: They are crafted using proprietary technology designed to offer enhanced absorption and superior bioavailability.*†
This liposomal technology is a game-changing innovation. Instead of delivering liposomes in the traditional liquid format, our advanced, pioneering process dehydrates them into a powder—without heat or chemicals. Research shows this approach not only continues to protect the nutrients, but it also makes them more stable and enhances their absorption rates.3,4 What’s more, dehydrated liposomes can be put into convenient capsules. We are the first supplement company to deliver true liposomal nutrients in this way.
Our four innovative formulas—Universal, Women’s, and Women’s 50+, and Men’s—are backed by science and rooted in nature. Each two-capsule serving contains a high-potency blend of 30+ 100% liposomal nutrients from Vitamin A to Zinc, including trace minerals and methylated B vitamins for rapid response. They are odor-neutral and gentle to digest, as well as gluten-free, vegan, and made without soy. And like all Solaray supplements, they are lab-verified for purity, potency, and identity.
